WILDLIFE INTERPRETATION

SEA provides wildlife interpreters with training for each of our programs: wildlife viewing, pup watch and tidepool walks. In addition, SEA offers seminars, webinars, training materials and “on the job” experience with seasoned interpreters to round out the training. Volunteering with SEA is truly a wonderful way to connect with wildlife, visitors and our local community.

Our Volunteer Interpretive programs include the following:

R

SEAL PUP WATCH

During Harbor Seal Pup season, wildlife interpreters are busy on low tides at Coquille Point from late April through May. At low tides, female seals and pups use Coquille Point as a birthing and haul out area. SEA volunteers help to monitor the interactions between the seals and human visitors. They also share best practices with visitors for safely viewing wildlife during this rare opportunity to get close-up to these beloved pinnipeds.

R

TUFTED PUFFINS

Tufted Puffins and many other nesting seabirds are on view at Face Rock Wayside in Bandon. On weekends during the months of May, June and July, SEA wildlife interpreters set up spotting scopes on the bluff to view the nesting seabirds and to share information with visitors and the local community.
R

SIMPSON REEF

SEA Interpreters are also present at the Simpson Reef Overlook near Charleston on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June through September 1. This is one of the premier sites on the Oregon Coast for viewing sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals and other wildlife. Our volunteers share their knowledge of this unique coastal habitat with hundreds of visitors each day.

R

MARINE GARDEN

SEA volunteers will be offering guided tidepool walks in the Coquille Point Marine Garden during the minus tides in the summer months. This is a new volunteer opportunity with SEA and is sure to be popular with visitors and the local community.

SEA also welcomes volunteer participation in the following areas: Tech support for seminars and training, public relations, advertising, fund-raising, website and graphic design skills, administrative assistance, community outreach and grant writing.
