Explore and Learn From SEA’s Trained Interpreters

PROGRAMS

Face Rock Wildlife Interpretation

Tufted puffins, common murres, pigeon guillemots, Brandt’s cormorants, double-crested cormorants, pelagic cormorants, black oystercatchers, and the ever-present western gulls are among the species that are present by the thousands. SEA’s wildlife interpreters are at Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint every weekend from early May to late July.

Take a picture of a Puffin!  Face Rock, Coquille Point and Table Rock in Bandon are important sites for many nesting seabirds.

Simpson Reef Wildlife Interpretation

Simpson Reef is a wonderland of marine wildlife.

Get a close-up view of California sea lions, Steller sea lions, harbor seals and elephant seals that congregate at mid-to-low tide to rest in the sun and avoid predators. You can listen to these pinnipeds barking and if you’re lucky, catch sight of grey whales and orcas passing by.  Our wildlife interpreters are at the Simpson Reef Overlook (about one mile south of the entrance to Shore Acres State Park on the Cape Arago Highway) every weekend from late May to early September. This is a premier site for viewing the largest collection of marine mammals on the Oregon coast.

Sea Lions! Seals! Bald Eagles! Whales!

Pup Watch

Harbor seals give birth and nurse their pups along the rocks in the Coquille Point Marine Garden every spring.

Trained SEA volunteers act as guardians of these seal moms and their pups and share best practices with visitors for safely viewing wildlife.

Harbor seals give birth and nurse their pups along the rocks and on the sand at the Coquille Point Marine Garden every spring from late April into June. Coquille Point is always a popular destination for visitors and pupping season provides an extra thrilling experience. During the low tide, a sand bar acts as a natural bridge over to the rocks and beach where the seals rest and nurse their young.  SEA volunteers help people understand that getting too close to the seals will cause them stress and could impact the pups’ survival.

Guided Tidepools Walks

The Coquille Point Marine Garden is a wonderland of towering sea stacks, nesting seabirds, and tidepools bursting with life.

Volunteers are on hand to share their knowledge and best practices for exploring the many tidepools.
SEA offers guided tidepool walks at Coquille Point during the low tides in the summer months. Trained volunteers lead small groups through the Marine Garden, offering guidance as visitors explore with the group and on their own. A schedule of guided tidepool walks is on our Events page with information on how to join one of our tours.
